Tale of the Red-Tail...

During our wonderful heavy rain storm last Friday, I hit the roof to make sure our drains were all in working order. As I approached the west side of the roof, screeching immediately began. I looked up to see one of our regal Wilshire Blvd red-tailed hawks sitting on our Gaylord neon scaffolding and it was not very happy to see me. The hawk gave me a thorough chewing out and asked that I please leave it alone. I politely backed up and replied in return to the hawk, 'please do not break our neon because it is very EXPENSIVE to repair each time someone does break it' and left it to continue on with the business of cleaning it's feathers.

Washington, D.C. Bound...

The Gaylord, became a D.C. apartment building (Barrington Court) once again for television's 'Scandal.' Home to the character, Olivia Pope, played by the masterful, Kerry Washington. There will be 3 scenes in an upcoming episode with interior & exterior shots at the Gaylord. I am sure you would not mind seeing Jake (Scott Foley) running the stairwell in his skivvies! I know I did not mind while he was standing outside of my office door in such a state of affair, while waiting for the scene to be shot.

Another Era...

... when cigarette billboards abounded publicly. Here on the side of the Gaylord are Marshall Dillon (James Arness) and Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake) of 'Gunsmoke' fame, promoting L&M cigarettes from 1958-59. For you youthful readers not familiar with Marshall Dillon and the original Miss Kitty (not the animated cat), "Gunsmoke' was a television series that ran on CBS for 20 years from 1955-1975.

Would it not be nice to have the Brown Derby returned to our corner and not the unappealing strip mall that is attached to our home today?

Another John Russo Photo Shoot...

This one was with model/actor Noah Mills and again the backdrop was from the Gaylord rooftop. The spread appeared in the April 2013 issue of GQ Mexico (photos have been cropped from the original publication). The Hollywood hills and Griffith Observatory never looked better in soft focus in the background!

A New Old Angle...

Shot from the first rooftop pool in Los Angeles, at the Langham apartments, this photo from the 1930's shows the Gaylord standing steadfast in the background to the right. That's quite the revealing swimsuit he is wearing on his dive... and the ladies seem to appreciate it!

Dia de los Muertos...

This, Saturday, November 1st, from 12noon to 12midnight, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) takes place at Hollywood Forever cemetery. Walking Dead...

In 2013, a photo shoot by John Russo, with actor Steven Yeun took place on the Gaylord rooftop. Here, you see the 'The Walking Dead' series actor, with the scaffolding to our 'Gaylord' neon in the background, from that 'Out' magazine photo shoot. If you are a fan of 'The Walking Dead,' you know it's been another good, action-packed season so far this Fall!

Spend a Day...

Just a short trip up Pacific Coast Highway, in the Pacific Palisades and overlooking the ocean, sits the Getty Villa. The $15 parking fee is well worth the visit (admission to the actual villa/museum is free). The husband and I went a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the collection, gardens and views. The villa is based on an ancient Roman country house and inside you will find a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities (Herakles/Hercules is prominent throughout). Plan a day to take it all in. Reservations are needed for entry. For more info, hours and to book your reservation, go to their website at, www.getty.edu/visit and enjoy!

Over the Decades...

Looking east, down Wilshire Boulevard towards the Gaylord, with varying degrees of the Wilshire Christian Church on the left in the forefront. Over the many decades there have been lots of changes along Wilshire Boulevard with the one constant of the Gaylord standing watch.

Photos in order, top to bottom, are from 1928, 1940, 1950, 1966 and 2013.

From the Skies Above...

Friday, October 10, 2014, 2:49 PM; One of our jet setting, bi-coastal tenants was just now on an airliner heading back east only to look down and spy on this! He quickly snapped this photo and sent it on to us from high above. Where's Gaylord? It's a new game. Can you find our happy home?

Classic TV Junkies...

All of you classic tv junkies missed it, just over a week ago, Galpin Ford, out in North Hills in the valley, held a hot rod & classic car show. On hand were the original batmobile, the Munster Koach from 'The Munsters,' the VW bus for the Scooby Doo gang and even Elvira's '58 T-bird! There were quite a number of other stylish and over the top George Barris and Ed 'Rat Fink' Roth vehicles on hand. As well as a bunch of classic Edsels (some are pictured above), beautifully restored.

LA is car culture and classic auto show events take place throughout the year in SoCal, so keep an eye out for the next one to pop up and go imagine taking a ride in one of the sweet numbers they may have on display.

'The Sparkle'...

Our Lana, is moving forward with her film, 'The Sparkle.' To see a preview and give her support, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ8GgGUo3Lk . Just part of the creative minds here at the Gaylord.

Three Distinguished Gentlemen...

The second signature on this page from the original Gaylord register of May 1926, is E.W.B. Fairchild. E.W.B. was only 18 years of age, at the time, but would go on to become the CEO of Fairchild Publications in New York. If you are in the fashion world, you know the Fairchild name, since they were the publishers of Women's Wear Daily. WWD is the fashion bible, read daily by all in the business and which I read everyday for the 13 years I worked in the industry back in New York. At one time, Fairchild Publications also owned 'Los Angeles' magazine.

Go down the register and you will come across the name, Dixwell Davenport (what a name!). Dixwell held the prestigious title of 'Chairman of Green Committee' at the private San Francisco Golf Club and he was also a member of the exclusive Pacific-Union Club. His home in S.F. was designed by Julia Morgan, the architect of Hearst Castle. We are talking connected & monied!

At the bottom of the register, 'Mr.& Mrs. Henry Krumb' of Salt Lake City. Henry was a top mining engineer in the country and the Department of Earth & Environtmental Engineering, at Columbia University is named the Henry Krumb School of Mines. Now that's leaving a legacy!

Just a few more of our notables from the Gaylord past.

There is a Number of Interactions Going on...

On the 4th line down on this page of the original Gaylord register from November 1925, is listed the Hungarian film writer & playwright, Ernest Vajda (pictured above from the Gaylord's 'The Buzzer' in Dec 1925), with nearly 50 writing credits. Ernest was the writer on 'The Cat's Pajamas' from 1926 which starred fellow Gaylord resident, Arlette Marchal (pictured above from the 'Gaylord Glimpses' of May 1927). Mr. Vajda also wrote many of the films that another fellow Gaylord resident, Adolphe Menjou was featured in, including 1928's 'A Night of Mystery.' This film was directed by Gaylord-ian, Lothar Mendes who was married to film actress & Gaylord resident, Dorothy Mackaill from 1926-28. (pictured here from the Dec 1927 issue of 'Gaylord Glimpses).

The connections do not stop there between all of the names on the original Gaylord register and they run deep. And just think, the money was big back then with residents arriving and listing their nurses, maids, servants & secretaries on the register with them.

Distinguished Actor at Gaylord...

First signature on this page of the original Gaylord register from September 1926, 1931's Oscar Nominated Best Actor for 'The Front Page', Adolphe Menjou and his mother, Nora on the second line. Mr. Menjou has nearly 150 film & television credits to his name. During his stay at the Gaylord, he made several films, including 'A Social Celebrity' with the iconic Louise Brooks, popularly known for her pageboy haircut. In 1930, he starred alongside Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich in 'Morocco.' Two of my favorites, 'Gold Diggers of 1935' with Dick Powell and Gloria Stuart and directed by Busby Berkeley and 'Stage Door' from 1937, starring Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers and a young Lucille Ball.

Listed below Adolphe's mother on the register is Hayden Talbot. Hayden had a few film & stage writing credits to his name. One 'adaptation' writing credit was for 1927's 'Buttons,' which starred a teenaged Jackie Coogan.

Further down the list is quite the colorful name of Bluford H.J. Balter. You will find that Bluford has one credit for an article he had written, "Urban Renewal' in the December 1959 issue of 'The American Mercury.' The article deals with the issue of eminent domain and a government's (New Orleans) land grab from individual citizens.

And the register list goes on with plenty more notables...

Colorful Gaylord Character of the Past on the Run...

First name on this page of the old Gaylord register, C.C. Julian, arriving on September 29, 1924 and departing on January 29, 1925. Otherwise known as Courtenay Chauncey Julian and originally from Canada. Before arriving to Los Angeles, in 1920, to strike it rich in the oil industry, he worked as a rigger in Texas. C.C. would become known for the 'Julian Petroleum Scandal' of the 1920's, swindling folks of their money to invest in his Julian Petroleum. By the Spring of 1923, he was trying to avoid prosecutors and a pending federal indictment. In early 1924, 'Charlie Chaplin decked him with a punch at Cafe Petroushka' and he had to dodge bullets while at his Los Feliz mansion... therefore, his most likely reason for arriving at the Gaylord in September 1924. The Gaylord was made up of all sorts of characters, coming and going!

This is just one of the many distinguished names that graced the original register for the Gaylord, from opening day in April 1924 to July 1927.

(info on C.C. Julian came from an April 10, 1994 LA Times article)

L.A. Excursion...

There still may be time for you to view the last of the beautiful lotus blossoms for this season, over in Echo Park Lake. After the extensive make-over that was finished last year, this is now a sweet park to visit and be sure to catch the 'Lady of the Lake,' the statuesque figure standing tall at the foot of the lake with incredible views of downtown behind her.

If you have the time, drive east up the hill to Angelino Heights and enjoy the old Victorian homes from one of L.A.'s prominent neighborhoods from back in the day.

Echo Park Lake is wedged between Echo Park Ave & Glendale Blvd, just south of Sunset Blvd.

The Victorian homes of Angelino Heights is located on Carroll Ave.

Have fun!

Mind Clearing Day Adventure...

Big Bear isn't just for winter... Gaylord residents, I have been wanting to make this trek for years now, but have always put it off because I thought Big Bear was a world away. Well, it may be a world away in your mind, but not in distance. Head east, at just under 100 miles away, you can be there in 1.5-2 hours! And the elevation at 7200 feet on the drive up helps to clear your mind in more ways than one... with the fresh air to breathe and removal of static happening in your head. The husband and I went up this past Saturday and the quaint town was quite busy in the middle of summer. It's not just for skiing, snowboarding or sledding during the winter wonderland months. You can enjoy the lake, hike or stroll the many shops & restaurants during the warmer months.

On Sunday, we went in the complete opposite direction and headed west to hit the beach in Venice & Santa Monica. Only in LA do we get to take advantage of such rewarding variety in easy limited time & space.

Time For Another Movie Date Night...

This Saturday night, August 16th, at 7pm, our Wilshire Center BID will present another Movie in the Park, across the street from the Gaylord. The event will take place on the great lawn of the RFK Community Schools and is FREE. Featured this time, 'The Lone Ranger,' starring Johnny Depp. If you are one of the lucky Gaylord residents that lives on the southside of the building and are high enough, you can watch the film from the comfort of your home... or be adventurous and actually go outside and sit on the lawn to watch. Make it another movie date night and ENJOY!
