Neighborhood Burger...

I went to lunch this past Wednesday to a classic L.A. burger joint that is just blocks away from us here at the Gaylord. Cassell's Hamburgers has been around for a long time and there are celebrity pics from a bygone era hanging on their walls of the likes of Angie Dickinson and Clint Eastwood. The beef is ground fresh on the premises and you do taste that freshness in the burger when you bite into it. Your burger can come in 1/3 or 2/3 pounds and you get to put all of your own toppings on it to just your liking! Try the cold mashed potato salad with it's zap of horseradish.

Cassell's Hamburgers is located at 3266 W 6th St, between Berendo & New Hampshire. Only open during lunch hours and up to about 4pm. Go get that big, juicy burger and chow down!

Fried Chicken & the Middle East...

Last night, met up with friends at the classic, Roscoe's House of Chicken' N Waffles! Always good there, especially when I am having the #13, Carol C. Special of a juicy, tender, fried chicken breast and a waffle, with a root beer. Oh, and a biscuit on the side. I love my biscuits! (no comment from the peanut gallery, please) Roscoe's has been around for a long time and I know I have been going there since 1990. Locations are on Gower and on Pico. Check out this L.A. institution if you have not been before. It is one of those 'must' pilgrimages you make, when in L.A., like going to Phillipe's or Pink's.

After a delectable dinner, it was off to the Levantine Cultural Center, on Pico, for a 'Carpet Concert.' The Levantine Cultural Center promotes the arts of the Middle Eastern & North African cultures. For this concert, it was a wonderful melding of Turkish, Persian, Palestinian, Kurdish, Armenian, Yemeni, Egyptian, Moorish... music and dance. The musicians were outstanding with their native instruments, absolutely beautiful music. You should look into upcoming events on their website at levantinecenter.org. They are located at 5998 W. Pico Blvd. Support the Levantine Center and their push for peace through the cultural arts.

The Gaylord Spirits Awoke...

and danced once again! Yesterday's performance by the Dustbowl Revival Band in our lobby was a total joy. 7 members of the band came to lift the spirits, past & present, with their mind-blowing, foot-tapping musical endeavors. This is a extraordinarily talented group to be followed. Many thanks to the band and the lovely Miss Mo for bringing them and their happy music to the Gaylord. AND, to the dancers that came to delight & wow our eyes with their impressive moves. It was an event not to have been missed.

There was also some spirit laughter out and about after the kicking up of heels, with a full house for the 'Ultimate Jammy Jam' Comedy Evening taking place in the lobby. The new musical accompaniment for the Jammy Jam was quite cute and entertaining. Thanks to all!

Victorian L.A. ...

YES, it did exist! A Victorian Los Angeles, in the 19th Century. To see some of this beautiful, intricate, historical past that is still with us today, visit the nearby Grier Musser Museum at 403 S. Bonnie Brae Street (near 3rd St). This restored Victorian home gives tours, reservations are required. Go to their website at griermussermuseum.org for more info.

Afterwards, you should take a quick hop over to Angelino Heights, near Echo Park, and take a stroll down the 1300 block of Carroll Avenue to view all of the stunning Victorian homes from L.A.'s first suburb. This dazzling array of Victorian gems have been lovingly restored by their current and previous owners. Visit on the web, preservation.lacity.org and tap into Angelino Heights for more info on this delightful, old neighborhood from the 19th Century.

GO! Take a stroll down Memory Lane and visit L.A.'s grand past.

Gaylord Alum Ambitious Enterprise...

Our sweet, creative Ritu Janjani, who resided with us for a short period in 2010 with her debonair, actor/director, husband Kiran, has taken what she had learned in L.A. back to the film industry in India. Ritu, a graduate of the Cinema Make-Up School, just down the boulevard from us on Wilshire, is opening up her own prosthetic make-up school in India to train future make-up artists in this craft, for the Bollywood industry. We wish her the best and hope for a delightful visit again from Kiran & Ritu in the future.
