One Constant...

Standing tall in 1936. The other constant, to this day, the 'G' shadow from the rooftop neon still falls in the same place on the back west facade of the Gaylord building, in the afternoon sun.

Singles & More...

Single and Gaylord resident, back in April 1927, Miss Marie E. Wells (pictured) was a 'well known playwright and stage star.' She also made an appearance in 34 film titles from 1915-1939, even having billing over Myrna Loy in 1929's 'The Desert Song.' If you go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPoqQdSeAXc you will see her perform 'The Song of the Brass Key' with Roberto E. Guzman, from this film. Trust me, you will get a kick out of this number!

Mr. Churchill...

While listening to KUSC, this morning, I heard the dj mention that today is Winston Churchill Day in the United States. With further research I found that on this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy bestowed upon Sir Churchill (one of the U.K.'s finest prime ministers) U.S. citizenship and declared April 9th Winston Churchill Day. It is coincidence that today is the 89th anniversary for the Gaylord and Sir Churchill's favorite place to eat when staying in Los Angeles is our beloved HMS Bounty, off of our lobby. Sir Churchill would stay at the Ambassador Hotel across the street, back in the day, but would make the walk over to our side to have a meal in our home.

Two magnificent & stately characters, Sir Winston Churchill and the Gaylord.

89th Anniversary Tomorrow...

Tomorrow, will be the 89th Anniversary of the opening of the Gaylord! Original builders & owners, J.B. Lilly and P.B. Fletcher had a vision that still endures today as our stately home.

From the April 1926 issue of 'Gaylord Glimpses' it was written,'Messrs. Lilly and Fletcher spent millions of dollars together with unlimited time and energy to make their dream come true, and on the ninth day of April, 1924, the Gaylord was completed and opened, and the "castle in the air" had become a castle in fact, a massive building of brick and stone and steel.'

Pictured, top photo, the Gaylord from 1924. Bottom photo, upper left, Mr. J.B. Lilly (President), upper right, Mr. P.B. Fletcher (Vice President) and bottom right, Mr. A.F. Farrow (House Manager).
