The Gaylord 'Buzzer' from April 1925...

This issue celebrates the First Anniversary of the Gaylord, which opened its' doors to much fanfare on April 9th, 1924. The party, on that day, started early and lasted until 3 in the morning!

On page 3; read the article in reference to the 1st birthday of the Gaylord. I particularly like the paragraph 'Music still permeates the air at frequent intervals and a jolly dancing party each month adds to my gayety. A musical tea with bridge and mah jongg is given on Wednesdays so that my ladies may be amused and entertained.'
page 4; a hilarious pictorial of the 'he-men' residing at the Gaylord.
page 5; it was a different era, that's for sure! In the 2nd paragraph it names a Mona Content as an accompaniment on piano for a soprano's performance in our lobby. I can not help but think that 'Mona Content' would work as a great drag name in this day and age.
There is also a reference to 'that little red-headed midget', otherwise known as "Kimmie" in paragraph 3. Such a reference would not fly today.
And mention of 'our Filipino house boy Philip.' This is why historic Filipintown, in Los Angeles, is located so close to the Gaylord. Many of those from the Phillipines worked the local hotels.
page 6; sorry for the missing corner of the page. I guess someone, previously, was way too interested in the photo of either Mrs. Harry Grossman or the Young Gaylord Bachelor and made off with it.
page 7; historic records about L.A. in 1925.
page 8 & 9; appointed details of the Gaylord, from construction materials to amenities offered. Residents, underneath all of those years of paint on your door & window frames is beautiful mahogany wood!
page 16; love the language used to describe the Gaylord, at the time. Bravo!

bygone Easter...

Pictured here is the Easter Parade festivities along Wilshire Blvd and in front of the Gaylord, from 1941. The streets were jammed and everyone dressed in their Easter best. Bonnets and furs and fedoras, oh my!

hawks...

Outside, enjoying a glass of wine and watching our family of hawks nearby. They are 2, that seem to have been living amongst us city dwellers now for the past few years. They are a wondrous sight to behold and they remind you, that even in this City of Angels, in the most concrete parts, nature still surrounds us and abounds if you take the time to notice. I just watched one of the hawks take a speedy nosedive for some prey, but came up emptyhanded. Better luck next time! I do have to say that over this past weekend I did see one of them flying above with a snake in its' talons, so good for you! When you are out, look up. They seem to go back and forth between the Archdiocese building (above the Big 5 & Radioshack) and the building with the huge 'LIVE LOOSE' billboard. The hawks have even been seen and photographed perched upon the good, old Gaylord. Take some time to enjoy this gift.
