Drama (Not Comedy) & Tragedy...

Here we have a photo (above) of the handsome Marcel de Sano (born Marcel Dragusanu in Romania), a film director and Gaylord resident in 1927. He directed Lionel Barrymore in "The Girl Who Wouldn't Work," in 1925 and in 1930 directed "Peacock Alley," produced by Robert Z. Leonard, another Gaylord tenant from 1926-27 and prominent filmmaker. Also in 1927, the lovely Arlette Marchal, notable French film actress resided at the Gaylord, to pursue her career in Hollywood film. A year later, in 1928, the two wedded (pictured together, below) and were together until 1933 (was it the Gaylord that brought them together!?!).
In 1936, Marcel was engaged to the famed American musical film actress Jeanette MacDonald and managing her career in Europe. Tragically, Marcel seemed to be a tortured soul and committed suicide by vehicle, in Paris, at the young age of 38, in 1936 (photo below of incident).
Such a sad loss, but this is just one of the many drama-filled stories from the lives of those who passed through the Gaylord.

Amanda resided here at the Gaylord from 2011-2013 when she moved to Mumbai. Now living in Calcutta, Amanda is enjoying her eventful journey through the music scene of India.
To catch one of her songs, "Puppet Life," released last year, you can go to youtube where you will also find more of Amanda's work.

From Gaylord Tyke to Popular Indie Band...

In February, Dork magazine did an interview with Clem Creevy of the popular, creative indie band "Cherry Glazerr" (if you listen to radio station kcrw you've heard their music) In the interview she hilariously & respectfully makes mention of the Gaylord in the first question.
As a tyke, Clem resided in the Gaylord during the early 2000's. She is a part of the Gaylord colorful history.

Another Member of Broadway Royalty at the Gaylord...

Pictured here, stage & film actress, Elaine Hammerstein, of the legendary Hammerstein family of Broadway. Elaine's father, Arthur Hammerstein was a big time producer of Broadway musicals and she was cousin to Oscar Hammerstein, the wonderful lyricist, composer & two time Academy Award winner. Elaine resided at the Gaylord from 1925-26. While living at the Gaylord she filmed her last motion picture in 1926, "Ladies of Leisure." She retired from acting that year, after having married James Walter Kays, influential member of California politics & society.
Now, can we talk about that fabulous turban & fur get-up she is wearing!
