67 Years Ago Today...

... at the Gaylord. Let's end the month on a sorta fun & tragic note. Rudolph W Mayer, brother of Louis B Mayer (yes, that prominent mogul of MGM Studios fame) died in his apartment at the Gaylord on Feb 28, 1951. Apparently, Rudolph was smoking in his bed and tragedy ensued. In my research, Rudolph was a colorful & shady character who found himself in a jam a number of times and Louis would have to rescue and get him out of trouble.

The image above is 'as found' online. If anyone out there has anymore facts relating to this story, please pass them on to us... like an apartment #, so we can thoroughly cleanse the unit of lingering spirits with sage.

AND, an important reminder to our current Gaylord tenants... DO NOT SMOKE IN BED!

Over Time...

Our "OG' neighbor, the Brown Derby. The top photo is from the 1920's and was taken when the Derby was in it's original place on the northwest corner of Wilshire & Alexandria. The photo above is from 1956 and was taken well after the Derby had moved to the northeast corner of Wilshire & Alexandria. Note the changes in the Derby neon sitting atop the roof and the changes in ladies fashions. The Gaylord is barely visible on the right in the above photo.

Flashback...

Folks, remember when pokemon-go was all the rage, in the not so distant past and the Gaylord made an appearance? One for the ages & Gaylord history!

'Hood History...

Found online, here are a couple of random portraits of the Ambassador Hotel 'lady' water fountain, located on Wilshire Boulevard, with the Gaylord serving as the landmark backdrop. Originally, the fountain appeared as a nude, but when the RFK Community School campus replaced the Ambassador Hotel, she was given some clothing so as not to corrupt the students(!?!).

Exposing...

This is another amazing photo from the Halston ad campaign, shot at the Gaylord in 2017. The photo showcases the beautiful, original 1924 section we restored a few years back that had been previously built over with an ugly extension. Look at the ornate tile work on those steps and the french doors. Why would anyone want to build over and cover up such wonderful details!?! Today, we appreciate the Gaylord history.
