February flew by (and almost all of us did literally, during that storm on Friday, February 17th), so let's turn the corner and get ready for a new month. The fabulous Gaylord stands tall behind the iconic Brown Derby in this superb photo.

Early Derby...
More Brown Derby... early Brown Derby, from when their original rooftop neon read, 'EAT IN THE HAT.' The top photo was taken from inside the living room of one of our #02 units, looking out west.
The photo, below, looks east with the Gaylord in the background.

Screaming Greens...
This past Sunday, we took a drive through all of the back country & canyon roads to see the lush, green landscapes after all of the rain we have been having and WOW... it was green! The photos, above, were taken in Upper Ojai. PEOPLE, get yourselves out and enjoy the views. We've been living through this drought here in recent years and it is a nice change to see nature thrive again. Just think how much more green it is going to get after this coming weekend's big storm passes through. The wild flowers will be going crazy, full bloom this Spring!

Both of these units have spectacular views of the 'HOLLYWOOD' sign & Griffith Observatory.
And just look at our spectacular Gaylord, there on the far right, from back in the day. A lot has changed in the neighborhood since then, but the Gaylord, Wilshire Christian Church and Chateau La Martine still stand.

A History Lesson...
There have been countless times when I have been standing out front of our beautiful Gaylord and overheard passing out of towners, young and/or intoxicated people state with wild laughter in some form or other the following, 'Hey look, the Gaylord! Can you believe that name!?! Who would name something that? Hahahahahaha...' I simply reply, 'Know your history.'
In April of 1924, when J.B. Lilly & P.B. Fletcher completed their stately building, designed by renowned architects Walker & Eisen, they named it the 'Gaylord,' after Henry Gaylord Wilshire (pictured above). This was L.A.'s first co-op building and the Gaylord was also the first building in L.A. to have a rooftop neon sign.
For those that do not know, Henry owned the land that much of Wilshire Boulevard now sits on. He gave the land to the City of Los Angeles in order to create the first boulevard to the sea! Now that you know, pass it on (please).

Music Fans...
Here's a photo of the late, great, Elliott Smith, taken at the Gaylord. Photo quality is not the best and I am not sure when it was taken, since it would have been before my time here. Supposedly, the photo was taken for 'Detour' magazine. Our Ben came across the photo and wanted to share with all those music lovers out there. Thanks Ben!
