Yes! We Have No Bananas...

...goes the popular song from July 1923.
Sorry folks, I know many of you have been checking in & stopping by to find out if we have any available units, but for July, we have no apartments coming available. Please keep checking in. Your day may come.

Pictured, is the Gaylord prior to opening April 9, 1924. Out front you can see the crates filled with top of the line furnishings for the apartments and the "Own Your Own Apartment" signage, as the Gaylord was one of L.A.'s first co-ops. You will also notice the rooftop neon is yet to be installed.

Dance...

In 1994, two hours before she was to perform in "Swan Lake," with the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, on Martinique, our Bertha defected from Cuba. Bertha was a principal dancer for both Ballet Nacional de Cuba and Ballet de Camaguey. Today, she is director and teacher at LA Cuban Ballet.

This Saturday evening, June 22nd, starting at 8pm, Bertha will present "Cabaret of the Arts." The event will take place at Monk Space, located at 4414 W. 2nd St. (just west of Western) and will include ballet, opera, burlesque and more. For more info go to, www.lacubanballet.com.

Take yourself out for some culture this Saturday night and show your support for our fellow Gaylord resident, Bertha!

The Floor Below...

Recently, we had to dig up a section of the Gaylord basement floor to re-pipe a portion of the 95 year old cast iron main water line. Lo and behold what we found below the existing linoleum tile floor was the original patterned blue & white porcelain tile, pictured here. We again wonder why someone would cover & hide such a beautiful, historic original detail from 1924!?! This is located at the base of the stairs from the lobby that lead down to the Men's Room and Laundry Room (which was originally the Pantry where the Gaylord residents could do a bit of grocery shopping & purchase liquor "under the table" during Prohibition).

Back At It...

YES! I am taking you there again for this "Shot of the Day," provided to me last week by our Aslan. Aslan looked out of his Gaylord living room window to find this magnificent beauty sitting there on the fire escape. This is one of our neighborhood juvenile red-tailed hawks. And how do we know this is juvenile? Because his tail is not yet red in color. What a creature to behold. Thank you Alsan for your swiftness in capturing this glorious moment.
