Film Noir...

What a fantastic shot! The above image comes from the film noir flick, 'Black Angel,' from 1946. It really sets the tone and the Gaylord... beautiful!

The keen eye, of our Steve, found this image and sent me the screen shot. If you would like to see this film, it will be featured in the Palm Springs 'Film Noir Festival,' coming up in May. The film, with two of the best character actors of the time in it, Peter Lorre and Broderick Crawford, will play on Friday, May 12th, at 7:30pm, at the Camelot Theatres. For more info you can go to their website at camelottheatres.com.

Former Tenant Scores Big...

Our brief, but former tenant, Warraire Boswell scores it big with his newest client, McDonald's. When Boswell had his studio here at the Gaylord, he was already designing custom suits and menswear for major league sports stars, such as Matt Kemp, who was with the L.A. Dodgers at the time and many more MLB, NBA and NFL players.

Now, he has branched out even further in a big way, by designing the new McDonald's uniforms you will be seeing in the upcoming months. Pictured below are his new designs. And our man, Boswell, stands tall, center, as always, between the 'golden arches.' Congrats on your continued success Bos! You were always the gentleman.

How Did People Live!?!...

In this photo (courtesy the Los Angeles Public Library), from 1950, looking east along Wilshire Boulevard from the Normandie/Irolo intersection with the Gaylord in the background, you see not a Starbucks or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in sight! Not even an office tower. Off in the distance you see the steeple to the Immanuel Presbyterian Church and the Bullock's Wilshire tower. Where did folks get their caffeine fix from?

New Employee?...

I walked out this morning to find the above character sitting at our Front Desk in the lobby. Needless to say, he was not very pleasantly responsive to my Monday morning queries and as I have said before, you never know who will show up in the Gaylord lobby. It's the crossroads of the world!

Big Day Tomorrow...

93 years in the making and still going strong! It's the Gaylord anniversary tomorrow, April 9th. The many and ever evolving stories continue to be told (you can scroll through the 'Older Posts' here on the Blog to read just a few of them and learn the history). Looking good for 93. Have a Happy!

(photo, above, is an early shot of the Gaylord, before the rooftop neon and you also see how the ground floor facade looked before EyeMax, HMS Bounty and Cafe Mermaid were even a thought)

Through the Morning Sun...

The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Parkway section of Wilshire Boulevard, in front of the Gaylord, is finally getting some much needed landscaping planted, this morning. We were beginning to think we were going to have to go out there in the middle of the night, under cover of darkness, to plant some greenery in there ourselves. The ice plant ground cover should bring some vibrant color when they bloom along with the existing crepe myrtle trees, which bloom in the Spring. The variety of succulents they are also planting will bring in some subtle color and medium height to it all. With thanks to our Wilshire BID for this project!
