Gaylord's Tot Princess Celebrates...

Our little Phoebe turned 2 yesterday! She is the proud & cutest daughter of Aslan & Trhea, who have been with us, here at the Gaylord, for 2 1/2 years now. Phoebe lights up every room she enters with her smile and tippy toes walk. A birthday celebration took place in our lobby for Phoebe and the 'Serbian' Santa (thank you, Davin) even showed up with happy wishes for the birthday girl!

'JFK with Gaylord...'

50 years ago, today, in 1963, JFK was assassinated while on a visit to Dallas, Texas. Today, we honor and remember JFK's inspiring leadership. Pictured here, is our President from 1960, while on a visit to Los Angeles with the Gaylord proudly standing guard over him.

The Gaylord has even more political history with Richard Nixon keeping an apartment in the Gaylord during the 1962 California Gubernatorial race, which he lost. This after having lost the 1960 Presidential race to JFK.

(A big thank you to Joe for finding this photo for us on the LA Times website.)

Mail Call...

Pictured above from the February 1926 'Gaylord Glimpses' is a view into what is today our Mail Room area. The door you see to the right of the chair was the original entrance to the restroom facility off our lobby (or as they listed the lobby back then, only 'the foyer' because our lobby was much grander!). That wall with the door is the east wall which houses many of our mailboxes currently (Originally, you would have picked up your mail from the Concierge Desk which was opposite of the passenger elevators).

Notice the ceiling light fixture, in the photo, is different from the one that hangs today. Both, current and past, are Oscar B. Bach designs, but the ones you view today were originally in other sections of our lobby (I'd like to know where this original one is!!!).

Also, where is that original torchiere wall fixture (another Oscar B. Bach design), in the corner, where our grand piano sits today? (Did you know there was a baby grand piano furnished in each #16 unit back in the day?!)

Another change, the console table and mirror, to the left. Again, the ones you currently view in the lobby were taken from another part of our glorious original lobby. These pieces, missing.

Thank goodness they did not remove our original Roman travertine marble walls we still get to enjoy today! And we all continue with that 'Roaring 20's' spirit from the original years of the Gaylord.

In Honor of the Upcoming Veterans Day...

Gaylord resident, Drew Lucas, is coordinating an event for Wednesday, November 6th, beginning at 12:30pm, on the Main Quad of Los Angeles City College, located at 855 N. Vermont Avenue, to honor and help empower those veterans at LACC. If you can, stop on by and lend your support to this important cause. The focus will be on the veterans re-entry into civilian life with a brief history of Veterans Day and to promote the Wounded Warriors Project, which helps with alternative techniques & outlets for mental wellness in dealing with PTSD & TBI and to raise awareness of suicide rates amongst veterans and the challenges they may face in school.

And remember, Veterans Day is honored on Monday, Nov. 11th. Take a moment to reflect.

10/31/13, Addendum; to help you put Veterans Day in perspective you may want to to read the story that was posted today at this link, travel.yahoo.com/ideas/fallen-soldier-213011521.html  .

Thank you all who serve.

Color of Another Kind...

You don't have to travel to New York to see a different flavor of color. Pictured is some of the wall art you will find while roaming the streets of the Arts District in downtown L.A. These shots were taken this past weekend and there is plenty more. You will also find such work on the streets around Gallery Row and both areas are full of restaurants for you to stop in to fill up so you may continue with your walking tour.

Autumn in New York...

Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh, the autumn colors of fall foliage in New York's Hudson River Valley can not be beat! This is where I grew up so it is in my blood. The third or fourth week of October is always a great time to visit when the colors are at their peak and I highly recommend the trip. The photo on top was taken from the Vanderbilt Estate, overlooking the Hudson River, in Hyde Park.

And, it was still apple picking time! Soon the fruit will be dropping off the trees. The photo, above, was taken on the Boscobel Estate in Garrison. Great fruit I tell you!

Oh No, Scandal at the Gaylord...

abc's 'Scandal' returned to the Gaylord, yesterday, to film another scene with the lovely Kerry Washington as 'Olivia Pope.' Look for an upcoming episode with an exterior shot of the Gaylord as '514 Barrington Court Apartments, Washington, D.C.' and Ms. Washington's character with a homeless person. Remember, the final riveting scene of last season took place at the Gaylord.

New Flavor on the Block...

Just opened on our block, next to EyeMax Optometry, is Boos Philly Cheesesteaks. I gave it a try last night, after several Gaylord residents went for lunch and were pleased with what they had. I went with the Boos Mushroom Steak. It was good and let me tell you, it is just like they like it in Philly, the flavors are rich & full, so you die-hard healthy, southern californians may want to balance it off with a plate of sprouts afterwards. It is finally nice to have a new food option nearby and very reasonably priced. Give it a try!

...or more appropiately, 'Movie in the School Yard.' You will enter on to the lawn through the Wilshire Blvd gates, located in the RFK Inspiration Park, directly across the street from the Gaylord. Bring your blanket and enjoy! (Wilshire Center B.I.D. will provide the popcorn.)

Reality...

I was just reminded, by her proud papa, that our talented & creative, Miranda, is currently competing on this season's 'FACE OFF, VETS vs ROOKIES', on the Syfy channel and is doing 'extremely well.' From what I have seen so far this season, Miranda has the talent to take it all the way! Let's all root for her.

This past Summer, we briefly had Bri stay with us here at the Gaylord, who was seen on the 'MasterChef' season that just recently ended on FOX. Bri did quite well for herself, making it into the top 6 and with being a vegetarian! She has quite the drive, knows all about flavors (including meat) & how to work a kitchen and has since moved on to take advantage of greater chef opportunities in NYC. Many good wishes to Bri with her endeavors in the Big Apple.

What's That?...

(The ad, pictured above, is from the 1990's. THESE ARE NOT THE CURRENT RATES in the above ad.)

When available and at this time;

BACHELOR UNITS            330-525 sq ft          $775-$1025/mo.
SINGLE UNITS                   410-670 sq ft          $1050-$1400/mo.
ONE BEDROOM UNITS    720-1050 sq ft        $1450-$2000/mo.
TWO BEDROOM UNITS   1380 sq ft                $2450/mo.

I am still surprised when some inquiring people respond the rental rates we offer at the Gaylord are expensive. (The rents are comparable to other apartment houses of similar status on Wilshire Blvd and we are in Los Angeles. For those of you coming from New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, you know what a bargain you are getting here and especially with the large size of the apartments.) My reply to them is with 3 points;

1.) It's the Gaylord.
2.) Location, location, location... on historic Wilshire Boulevard and central to everywhere in the L.A. basin, downtown, westside, valleys, beaches, mountains, studios, universities, EVERYWHERE.

and 3.) It's 'The' GAYLORD. Know the history.

You may scroll through the 'Older Posts' to find availability and bits of history on our stately home.

Car Buffs, Celebrity Buffs...

Just down the 'boulevard,' at the corner of Fairfax, is the Petersen Automotive Museum and for those of you into car culture this is worth paying a visit to. The museum has a permanent streetscape exhibit, located on the ground floor, telling the history of the automobile in southern California with a lot of fine examples from over the years.

Currently, and why the husband & I went to visit this past weekend, are 2 exhibits of interest. 'Fins: Form Without Function' is an exhibit of those beautiful fins (now, who doesn't like a sleek fin?) that started to adorn the automobile during the mid-century decades. In this exhibit you will even find Jayne Mansfield's 1957 pink Lincoln Premier... just as sweet & pretty as the owner!

The other exhibit, 'Pickups: The Art Of Utility' is all about the transformation of the pick up truck over the years. And since the husband & I both drive a pick up truck (my last 3 vehicles have been pick ups) we had to see this exhibit.

There is also a great Steve McQueen owned classic jaguar on hand!

Admission is $15.00. www.petersen.org

The Little Girl of March 1925...

Appearing on the cover of the March 1925 issue of the Gaylord's 'The Buzzer' was the sweet looking Georg'Ann Gross, who lived here at the Gaylord with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Nels Gross. Mrs. Nels Gross being a part of the well known Gaylord social set, hosting many colorful bridge teas in the original Gaylord Solarium.

With some research I found that sweet Georg'Ann passed away in 2010, having lived an exemplary life. There was an article written on her in the Los Angeles Times, back on June 1, 1999, telling the story of her Conejo Valley Welcoming Service in the Thousand Oaks area in Ventura County, where she was known as the ambassador of goodwill. This she was doing at the age of 77!

Gerog'Ann Gross Cutter, just another magnificent Gaylord resident from the past.

Ups Then Downs of Historical Los Angeles Gaylord Couple...

From 1924 to1932, Richard Peter Shea and his wife, Ellen, kept a 'de luxe apartment' in the Gaylord. Mr. Shea having made his financial fortune through real estate investments in the wealthy enclaves of Los Angeles and the development of Hancock Park before selling all of his holdings in these properties for a staggering amount of money. The article, at top, appeared in the March 1925 issue of the Gaylord's monthly publication, 'The Buzzer.' Mr. & Mrs. Shea spent 1924 & 1925 building their dream castle out in the Antelope Valley, just south of the California Poppy Reserve. They split their time for 5 years between their apartment here at the Gaylord and their castle in the desert, hoping to improve Mrs. Shea's health. During the Stock Market Crash of 1929, they lost everything and the bank took over the castle. In October of 1932, Mrs. Shea passed away from pernicious anemia. Two months later, Mr. Shea either walked into the ocean or jumped from the Santa Monica pier and his body washed up to the Venice pier with the ashes of his wife attached to him. It is a tragic love story and part of the Gaylord history

Photo above is of Shea's Castle as it appears today.

The Gaylord Has a Full House...

Back in March of 1925, Mrs. Henry C. Kimbrough (pictured above) along with her husband, made the Gaylord their home. Moving from Lexington, Kentucky where they had a stake in extensive tobacco & oil interests. This young couple knew the place to be, the Gaylord!

Unfortunately for those looking today to also make a home at the Gaylord, we have NO AVAILABLE UNITS, as we currently have a full house with no units on notice for vacating. But please, keep an eye out on this Blog for any upcoming listings and you may eventually find yourself with the stately 3355 Wilshire Boulevard address.

What Are You Doing for the Upcoming Labor Day Holiday Weekend...

This Labor Day weekend, are you getting out of town or staying in? Still looking for something to do if you are keeping it local? The L.A. Arboretum, over in Arcadia, is a good place to spend a few hours. This is where the peacocks have the run of the land and it is always a sight to behold when these beautiful creatures cross your path, especially when they open their fan tail for you. Stroll the grounds and spend some time relaxing under a shady tree. Located on Baldwin Avenue, across from the Santa Anita Race Track. Admission is $9.00. Visit their website at www.arboretum.org for more info.

Back to the Hollywood Farmers' Market...

Besides all of the wonderful fresh fruits, vegetables & flowers you can get from the Hollywood Farmers' Market  on Sundays from 8am- 1pm (across from Amoeba Music on Sunset Blvd), there are these guys. The California Feetwarmers perform lively numbers for your enjoyment and the one guy on the left always seems to have his toddler girl strapped to his back absorbing all of the great music in. Check them out! www.hollywoodfarmersmarket.net

Spirit, Heart Missing...

Martha and Bruce, have moved on from the Gaylord to pastures of the east coast kind. They will both be missed greatly by the Gaylord and its tenants. Martha, having done the extensive restoration work on the cast iron & glass screen, as well as bringing the Christmas holiday spirit with decorations in our beautiful lobby was also behind producing many of the art shows at the Gaylord over the past few years. And Bruce, you would randomly find, at times, voluntarily polishing the front, brass plaque of 'The Gaylord' which hangs proudly on our home.

We thank them for the years of support and wish them both much happiness & success on their new journey.

A Day at The Getty Center...

This past Saturday, the husband & I drove up Sepulveda Boulevard and spent the afternoon at The Getty Center and took in one of the current exhibits and the gardens. If you want to enjoy some spectacular views of the L.A. basin clear out to the Pacific, this is a place to go because you can view from their beautifully landscaped gardens (pictured on top). Remember, admission is free, but if you drive to there, parking is $15. There is also a bus (Metro Rapid Line 761) that drops you off right at their driveway entry.

We viewed the photography exhibit 'Japan's Modern Divide' with photos by Hiroshi Hamaya (that is one of his b/w photos above) and Kansuke Yamamoto. Hiroshi's photos were more about day to day life and the sweetness of events celebrated. While Kansuke got into surrealism with his images and the collages he produced were intriguing. Both of these master photographers lived during most of the 20th century. This exhibit is on view until Sunday, the 25th of August. If you miss it there is still all of the classic art collections on view at the Getty to enjoy. The Getty Center is a good escape day. For more info, www.getty.edu

The Ceiling That Is...

No, the world has not gone upside down. You are looking UP at the original ceiling located in front of the passenger elevators! This hidden gem still exists behind the current dropped ceiling. In the past I had posted about the original ceiling, but recently Axell was able to shoot some better photos for us while working on a plumbing issue. One day I will get this treasure revealed for all to appreciate!
