Interesting Backstory...

... about Wilshire Center on CityWatch. If you go to citywatchla.com you will find a bit of history on the Wilshire Center/Koreatown neighborhood written by a very familiar & influential L.A. family name. In 'Koreatown Profile: The House Home Savings Built,' Howard Ahmanson, Jr. writes of his family's time living in the neighborhood and his father's creation of the Ahmanson Center (the two concave, impressive structures), located on Wilshire Blvd, between Serrano & Oxford Streets. Every time I go pass this mid-century architectural gem, I admire the large, exterior orb lights hanging around the perimeter. Just brilliant. Read up!

It is with Great Sadness...

...to announce the passing of our good-natured Max, this past Saturday. Max had resided at the Gaylord for the past 21 years, having moved into his apartment in the Fall of 1991.

Max had been on the rebound and we were fully awaiting his return soon, but he left us unexpectedly. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

We will miss his greetings and kind words around our home, here at the Gaylord.

Our Luca...

Luca Ellis, swinging crooner & debonair Gaylord resident, made an appearance this morning on Good Day LA, Fox Channel 11, to promote his weekly show at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. I hope Jillian Barberie Reynolds was able to keep her hands away from you Luca (though you probably wish otherwise). Go and check out Luca's show, 'Renaissance of the Standards with Luca Ellis', backed by a live band, Friday evenings between 8:30- 11pm, at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa.

Picture It...

The year was 1954 and the date was December 21st. The act, aerialists Benny & Betty Fox. High above Wilshire Boulevard, atop the Gaylord, tempting the fate of gravity and performing their feats of daring. (in both photos, in the upper left hand corner, you will notice the backside of the "G' to our 'Gaylord' rooftop neon.)

Apparently, Benny & Betty Fox would be hired to travel the nation and perform their act on top of high rises, as a promotional tool for the buildings.

Intellect of History Regretfully Moves On...

Joan (pictured on the right) has recently had to move into an assisted living home, on the westside, where she will receive the help needed with her day-to-day routine and work on her physical therapy. Joan has resided at the Gaylord for 19 years. An avid reader of history and the Bible, she blazed her own trail and made her daily trek to the HMS Bounty for a good, hearty lunch. Upon visiting Joan recently, in the new home, she was in good spirits, jovial and eating a full meal. Her inquisitive mind, sweet attitude & sense of humor will be greatly missed here at the Gaylord. We wish Joan the best on her continued trailblazing!

Hotel Registry...

In the glass case, opposite the passenger elevators, you will find one of the hotel registers from 1926. On the right page, some of the signatures listed here are those of J.B. Lilly and his wife, Ruth Lilly, who arrived on 08/31/1926 and checked into unit #201. J.B. was one of the original owners and the President of the Gaylord and Ruth was editor, for a time, of the original 'Gaylord Glimpses' magazine.

Also listed on this page are Eduardo Ortiz and Mrs. Antonia Prieto de Ortiz, who signed in on 09/03/1926 for unit #604, from Mexico City. At the time, Mr. Ortiz was the Secretary of Communication & Public Works for the Republic of Mexico.

On the left hand page, glancing down to 08/20/1926, you will find the signature of actress Marjorie Daw, coming over from the Ambassador Hotel and registering for our unit #1114. Miss Daw was featured in 72 films from 1914 to 1929.

These are just some of the distinguished signatures that have graced the pages of the Gaylord registers.

LA Weekly blog....

In this weeks issue of LA Weekly, there is a slightly amusing entry on nautical themed establishments, located in Koreatown, which includes the Bounty.
